More than a hundred pigs are to be buried in Australia's largest cemetery as part of a controversial, world-first scientific trial that aims to create more grave space, according to Fairfax Media. It says it is a contentious move at odds with numerous traditional religious customs, Rookwood Cemetery intends to accelerate the human decomposition process so more people can be laid to rest in the same plot.

Upon the death of his wife in 1970, Mr John Smith purchase interment rights for two adjoining (potentially also double depth) graves.

He was later buried in the same grave as his wife. Upon his death there was no estate, apart from the then-vacant grave. His granddaughter wishes to claim the graves, so she can inter her own mother’s cremated remains in the vacant grave and then place a monument upon the two graves.

What does she need to do?

The short answer is no, if we are to comply with law and regulation and if we are referring to cemeteries set aside for the burial of decease persons, and their commemoration.

The Public Health Regulation 2012, Section 8 (Disposal of Bodies) states:

• body means the body of a dead person, but does not include the cremated remains of the person.

Section 8 prescribes the matters relating to the body only. It does not mention animal cadavers. Information about the disposal of animal carcasses is available from the Department of Primary Industries.

Section 54 of the Actthroughout refers to the burial of human remains.  Essentially, it is predicated entirely on understanding interment rights as pertaining to a ‘person’ or ‘persons’ and ‘human remains’.

 A Natural burial ground in New Zealand is providing a forest with a new lease of life.

A natural burial project at Waikumete Cemetery in west Auckland is helping individuals make environmentally friendly choices in death, while giving a native forest a chance to thrive.  Waikumete is New Zealand's largest cemetery and one of the country's largest urban parks.  Since 1886, it has served as the main cemetery for the Auckland region.  In 1999, it became the first cemetery in New Zealand to open an eco or natural burial area.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, one of Sydney's largest and oldest cemeteries is trying to squeeze more bodies per burial plot, in a bid to address Sydney's looming shortfall of burial spaces.

From next year, Sydney families will be able to bury their loved ones in specially-designed plots designed to hold as many as 11 remains on a single site, at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park in Matraville.
